You’re all booked in and excited for your session but the butterflies in your tummy (not the ones being created by your little one jumping on your bladder) are telling you ‘hang on, what are you going to wear for your maternity photos?’
There are a few things to consider when choosing what to wear for your maternity photos including budget, style and comfort. So here are my top looks for getting your dream pregnancy photos and reasons why they might be the maternity photoshoot outfit for you.
The wrap dress is the classic look for Mum’s-to-be who would prefer more of a covered up look. If you are feeling self-conscious (which you absolutely don’t need to be but that’s a whole other blog post) about certain areas like top of arms or even stretch marks on your bump this style of dress conceals but flatters. The other added bonus with the wrap dress is that there is option to have a slinky leg exposed if you begin to feel more at ease.
This dark green dress pictured about highlights this Mum’s beautiful pale skin and dark hair but would also look great on red heads and blondes too.
Asos offer few budget friendly options .
Check out LansyCustomDress for a handmade wrap in your chosen colour.
If you are looking for a little more skin then an off-the-shoulder dress can be a beautiful way to keep things classy and elegant but with relaxed mother-earth vibes. If you are looking for a more boho style definitely look for a tiered skirt like the one pictures above, this will give lots of texture and look great on camera. Alternatively, you could opt for a smoother look with a stretch fabric like the Shien dress linked below. The stretch fabric will give less movement and texture but a great silhouette. Both options will look great, it just depends on which aesthetic you are looking from your maternity photoshoot outfit.
SHIEN a stretchy off the shoulder number.
Asos one shoulder tie waist in pale pink.
LightintheBox off-the-shoulder tiered boho just like the one pictured above.
When deciding what to wear for your maternity photos, you should also consider your own personality. So if you like to make a statement then the lace bell sleeve dress is for you! Bringing the goddess vibes these vintage dresses look great in any location and really pop out from the page. They do tend to be on the pricier end of the scale when it comes to budget but keeping an eye on Ebay is worthwhile as they do pop up fairly regularly. The one pictured above is from the US as they have a much more prolific maternity photography industry across the pond and it is hard to find UK made maternity dresses in this style. Other options are to rent dresses for the day or to borrow from my Client Closet.
LoveBirdsCo and Wish have some budget friendly options.
If you are looking for the real deal and a full on ‘wow’ moment, LaceBohoDress on Etsy have loads of beautiful options to choose from.
Last, but not least, in the dress options we have the adorable peek-a-boo bump dress which is a firm favourite with those looking for maternity photos. These dresses give great versatility to show your beautiful bump but its also easy to drape the fabric and hold it in place with a posed hand underneath too. This gives a great range of shot options for your gallery and allows you to bare that bump really easily.
Amazon have a really reasonably priced range of maternity dresses in this style with a wide variety of colour options.
AvaDress is another US based company but this option has a long sleeve for a little more coverage.
Do not fear. If dresses aren’t your thing there are lots of different options out there. Your maternity photo’s are all about you and your baby so never feel you have to wear something that makes you uncomfortable. Your maternity photoshoot outfit should always make you feel beautiful, natural and empowered.
Lots of Mum’s are opting for the relaxed big shirt and pants look. This can looked relaxed, styling and totally authentic. Maybe you live for denim and your jeans is where you feel most at home. Pair them with a slouchy knit cardigan or a light silk shirt and bra for a gorgeous intimate portrait. Finally there is also the option of a Kaftan or skirt and top combo as seen above. This can be a great way to retain that boho vibe without being as covered up as with a full tiered dress.
Now that you’ve seen the options and decided on a style that speaks to you why not head to my Client Closet where you can see what items I have for you to borrow for your session.
