As a family portrait photographer, something I get asked a lot before shoots is ‘What should we wear?’ Now what I would love to be able to reply with is ‘Whatever you like, go crazy!’ However as fun as this would undoubtably be for everyone, unfortunately its not going to result in the best pictures for you.
What to wear? Here are the key do’s and don’ts of styling your family photoshoot so that you can select the best wardrobe for your family and avoid those awkward pitfalls at all costs.
What a time it was. Self expression was worn as a badge of honour and more really was more. Big hair, big shoulder pads, big make up. But, I think we have all learned some valuable lessons from trawling through family photo albums. Bang on trend doesn’t always stay bang on trend!
The images that you capture with your family on your photoshoot will be treasured for generations to come. When it comes to choosing your outfits think classic and timeless. Something that you’ll love to see your family in for years to come not necessarily something that is really current right now (ripped jeans and shoulder holes get a dishonourable mention here).
A great rule of thumb with dressing for a cohesive family look is to go for a base of neutrals – creams, beige, denims. Then pick a few colours that compliment or contrast where you are going to be having your pictures taken. For example if you have chosen a sunset beach setting you might want to include some rust or mustard tones. If you are shooting in woodland you can add in some burgundy or reds to pop against the green foliage.
Alternatively, if you’re shooting in a particular season you can pick out shades that will work together like pastels for Spring and jewel tones for Autumn.
Just a few pieces in complimentary tones can really make an image pull together and pop. Just don’t over think it. You really don’t all need to be identical!
I love pattern. I have pattern all over my house. However, when it comes to great outdoor photography, pattern is not your friend. It can be messy and confusing to the eye and clash with the setting. Large logo’s and decals also fall into this category. Small ones can be edited out but your photographer will struggle to remove multiple large logo’s, scripts or wording from every image in your gallery.
What to wear instead? To add interest choose textures and layers. A knitted jumper, a top with some lace detail, a wool coat. All these textures will be picked up by the camera and give definition without confusion.
I know how tempting it can be once you’ve booked your shoot to whip online and start picking out new outfits for the session. They arrive, you try them on, they are little tight or it crinkles a bit when you move but it’s fine when you stand straight. So you pop it back in the wardrobe ready for the big day. Lovely.
Well, not so much. Very rarely does great photography happen when the client has to keep hitching and adjusting their clothes. And even less rarely does a family photographer ask you to stand still. To get beautiful authentic photography that captures the real love and connection between your family you’re going to have to move. To cuddle, to play, to run.
So choose clothes that are comfortable, that you know fit you now (not in two months when you will be at your optimum weight, am I right?!). Loose and floaty always looks better than too tight and uncomfortable.
What to wear does not have to be complicated or confusing or expensive. You probably have most of what you need in your wardrobe already!
