You have booked a Autumn Family Photography Session and boy are you excited. The leaves are beginning to fall, the nights are drawing in and there is starting to be a chill in the air. You want the best pictures possible but NOT to be trawling the shops for clothes for the whole family all weekend. Luckily I’m here to help with some top styling tips for nailing the ultimate Autumn Family Photography.
You are investing in bespoke photography but your styling choices shouldn’t have to break the bank. I always recommend to clients to look through my Pinterest boards and select the favourite picture inspirations that you love. Then look closely at what attracts you to these pictures? Is it colours, is it a mix of textures, is the styling flowy and boho or casual and rock n roll?
Check out my Autumn Styling Pinterest Board to see some of my favourite recommended looks.
Next is all about looking through your wardrobe at home and seeing what you already have. You might have decided on a key colour palette thats going to connect your family styling but not (hopefully) everyone is going to be dressed head to toe in mauve. So now is the time to think about the other tones and neutrals that are going to be the base of your styling. Chances are you already have these in your wardrobe already so now is the time to dig out those denims and neutrals.
Now you have a better idea of what you already have now you can shop for some of those key pieces that are going to make your Autumn Family Photography pop! Ideally a few of these pieces are going to be either the same colour, a complimentary colour or the same colour tone. This will give your images a cohesive look that takes them from 7/10 to 10/10 instantly. I always recommend that this key colour should feature on Mum predominantly and then can be picked up in a few other elements of the rest of the families styling eg if Mums dress is claret, maybe her daughter has a claret cardigan and Dad has a red stripe in his flannel shirt.
Autumn can often be changeable weather wise here in Somerset so when you’re putting together your families styling options remember to go for light layers. Chances are little ones will be happy in a long sleeve top and jumper rather than a full coat. Chunky knitwear can add some great texture to your images plus jumpers and cardigans make for great cuddle shots. For little girls I recommend cosy tights matched with denim/corduroy skirts and pinafore dresses to add layer and textures. For boys a jumper or shacket/thick flannel shirt combined with jeans and boots always looks great.
The final piece of the Autumn Family Styling Puzzle is often the footwear and unfortunately this sometimes results in a last minute decision to throw wellies in the mix. I get it, kids go through footwear at an alarming rate, they aren’t cheap and potentially outdoor photography could mean mud. So wellies appear to be a fantastic solution yes? No! These photo’s are going to be on the walls of your home, in family albums handed down to your children’s children…. and you styling was all for nothing if the pair of glittery Pepper Pig wellies swinging on your child’s feet have stolen the spotlight in every image. It may be a little extra expense but a pair of neutral boots will be the best investment you make this Autumn, I promise!
