Join me on my Somerset Photography Adventure: Relocating My Photography Business to Yeovil

Great news – Georgia Gee Photography recently relocated to Somerset! I’m so excited to grow my Family, Newborn and Maternity photography business and get to know this wonderful part of the country. I thought I’d take this new start as an opportunity to tell you a little bit more about me, my passions and interests and my photography journey so far…

A little bit of background

Originally from Tiptree in Essex (famous for the jam!), I’m a country-girl at heart. As a child, I relished the freedom of long summers spent roaming the fields and hedgerows on my grandparents’ farm. In truth, I’m happiest when I’m out and about in nature.

After University, I was keen to spread my wings and travelled around Asia, Australia and New Zealand, bringing a digital camera with me to help document my journey. During this time, I became fascinated with the idea of storytelling through photography.

Although I loved the creativity photography gave me, I didn’t consider it as a career at this point. Instead, when I returned to England I embarked on a teaching career and worked as a primary school teacher in Plymouth. I enjoyed the challenges and rewards of working with children, but my passion for photography always ticked along in the background as a creative outlet.

From sideline to full-time family photography

Fast-forward to 2019 and I began to dabble in family photography as a sideline to my teaching job. When the pandemic stopped us all in our tracks, I took the opportunity to develop my editing skills during lockdown and build and market my website. A seed of an idea was beginning to form. Scary as it seemed, maybe I could go with my gut and turn family photography into a full-time venture?

Opportunity for change arrived when my husband Angus’ job as a Royal Marine helicopter pilot was transferred to Yeovil in Somerset. We got married last year – our wedding was tiny, but super-special and unique.

Building community connections in Somerset

So far, I’m really enjoying Somerset life and appreciate the warm welcome we’ve had in Yeovil. I’m busy exploring Somerset photography locations and getting to know this place I’m lucky enough to live and work in.

Finding perfect, season-appropriate outdoor photography locations depends on a number of factors and I’m working hard to discover Somerset’s hidden corners – places where vibrant colour and natural light combine. Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

As a small business owner, I’m also keen to connect with, and help promote, other local businesses. I’d love to build a network of small businesses in Somerset that I can support and collaborate with on different projects.

What does home-life look like?

Me and Angus love cooking and entertaining. I’m also obsessed with getting creative, Harry Potter and our lovely dog Luna the Labrador (she’s the best doggo ever). My Pinterest boards are packed with recipes to try, clothes to sew and furniture upcycling ideas. When I’m not busy location scouting in Somerset, I’m driving across the county to collect my next Facebook Marketplace furniture purchase.

Somerset is such a family-centred county and I’m looking forward to contributing to its sense of community. It’s always fun bringing people together and sharing ideas, life hacks, recipes and dog-walking routes.

Why family and maternity photography?

I love working with kids in a way that encourages fun and silliness, love and cuddles, exploration and adventure. There’s something magical about seeing the transition from meeting a shy little person in the carpark, to the end of the photography shoot, when they’re asking if I’ll come to their birthday party, or come to live with them now (both of these have happened!)

Family and maternity photography can be beautiful, high quality and impactful, without being posed or feeling forced.

Celebrating women

I come from a family of strong women, with my Mum, Grandma and three aunties all having a meaningful influence in my life. So, it’s not surprising that one of my driving forces is empowering and championing women to get in front of the camera.

Last year, I ran an International Women’s Day competition and worked with a local salon to give the winners a glamorous make-over and photoshoot. Feedback from the ladies was soul-enhancing – they felt beautiful and fabulous and everyone involved had an amazing day.

Next Spring, I hope to offer something similar in Somerset with Mummy and Me sessions, so children can see their wonderful Mums looking and feeling glorious.

Looking to the future

My next goal is to work with clients through their whole journey to motherhood, documenting all the important milestones along the way – from baby bump, to newborn, sitting up, crawling, toddlerhood and beyond.

During the crazy days of early parenthood, I know getting out of the house can feel like a near impossible task. With this in mind, I also offer the option of natural and relaxed in-home family photography that fits around your needs and is totally pressure-free.
