Something I hear a lot from photography clients during sessions is the comment, ‘We haven’t had any pictures taken together since our wedding”. So when talking to clients about having a Maternity Photoshoot it’s no surprise that some have never even heard that this is an option let alone considered booking a shoot themselves.
So here are my top five reasons why I believe Maternity Photography can be one of the most impactful and beautiful ways to enjoy and embrace this time in your families journey.
Strengthening Family Bonds
This is a wonderful way for the family to come together and spend a little time showing love to one another before the new baby comes. As I said earlier, many couples have never had photos taken together other than on their wedding day and (maybe it’s a British thing?) we seem almost embarrassed at the idea of admitting that we would like more. So now is the perfect time! Embrace the chance to cuddle up, get emotive and feel passionate about the love you share and the family you’re creating together.
Celebrating Your Body
Let’s not forget that your body is growing an entire human so whether this is your first baby, your last or somewhere in between, documenting what your body looks and feels like at this time will never be something you regret. I always advocate booking a session in your 32-34week of pregnancy this is that sweet spot between your bump looking beautiful and round and you beginning to feel ready to pop. I love to see my Maternity Mums glow with confidence during their session as they start to feel empowered and confident. Helping them choose a beautiful dress from my client closet, posing them in shapes that show of their bodies and bumps at their best and cheerleading them throughout the session so they feel every inch a goddess.
Cherishing the Here and Now
If you already have children this can be a wonderful opportunity to capture some sweet moments with them before the birth of your new baby. A lot will be changing for them very soon, so giving them some quality time to show them how special they are and what an important role they play in your family will go a long way to helping them embrace their new role as an older sibling. The imminent arrival of a new baby also means that these are the last few weeks that your family will look the way it does so it can be a great time to stop and document this point in the journey.
Getting Excited for Change
Undoubtably you’re super excited to meet your little own but, if you’re impatient like me, I bet some days it feels like your due date is never going to get here. Planning fun milestone activities like having your baby shower, decorating the nursery and packing your hospital bag can help to break up those last months of waiting and give you some extra celebration moments. Adding a beautiful Outdoor Maternity Photoshoot to that list of wins can help you to cherish and enjoy this time rather than wish it by quicker.
Making memories for the future
In the not too distant future your new baby will be sitting beside you wanting to know all about their family, their history, the time before they were born, piecing it all together to help them build a picture of themselves and their place in the world. Having these beautiful maternity images is a powerful way to share with your child how loved and wanted they are, how they fit so perfectly within the family jigsaw. There are studies that show children who regularly see themselves in family photos have a much stronger sense of self identify, have improved mental health and self confidence. This always makes me think of the popular quote, ‘There are two gifts we should give our children, one is roots, the other is wings’. Photography can help your children understand where they come from, how much they are loved and strengthen those growing roots.
