We all know that persuading your other half to get on board is half the battle when deciding to book a family photography session. So here is my go to guide to give you all the perfect persuading power you need to convince the man of the house that it will be fantastic fun for all the family. Including him!
Choosing a location for a fun family photography session is something that I like to do with the client for two reasons. Firstly, I like to make sure it’s a location where there will be tonnes of natural light and loads of opportunities for gorgeous pictures. Secondly, I like to make sure that the location is not going to be heaving with people. The last thing you want is a busy park with people trotting by or teenagers giggling on the next bench across.
For some locations that might mean choosing off peak times like an early morning Sunday session or it might mean taking clients on a bit of a walk off to find a more secluded spot. For others that might just mean we take a wander off to a more secluded area.
I always aim to give my clients a nice variety of candid, posed and detail images in their gallery. With most sessions I aim to get the posed ‘everyone looking at the camera’ images out the way first. This is the optimum time for these because everyone is looking ‘box fresh’. Then once that is out of the way we can get on with some more fun elements of the shoot.
I’ll get you playing silly games to get the kids giggling. We’ll go off exploring the location to find trees to climb or splash in the river. I might ask you to all cuddle up on the blanket and tell jokes (Dads really love this bit!).
All the while I’ll be snapping away, chatting and guiding you. No flashy lighting or props. Just me and the camera.
Where do I out my hands?
Posing does not come naturally to many of us and there is often a lot of misconception from blokes that if they look like they are enjoying themselves (shock horror) they going to look silly.
The truth is of course the complete opposite! No you don’t need to be giving it Ben Stiller ‘Blue Steel’
As you’ve already read, one way to combat this is to have lots of fun playing games, getting everyone out of photography more and into ‘we’re just here to have fun’ mode. The other thing I like to do is give tonnes of praise. It sounds obvious but there is nothing better than seeing peoples shoulders relax when I look through my camera and shout ‘Wow! Guys this looks amazing!’
What’s more I like to prove it. Right at the start I like to show families a few of their shots from the back of my camera and really build up there confidence that they’re going to come away with some truly awesome images.
There is nothing awkward or cringey about a fun family photography session and persuading your other half to take part will mean that both you and your children have some amazing memories to treasure.
